"Tibb-e-Nabawiy - Prophetic Medicine-Medical cures prescribed by Nabi Muhammad (Salallaahu Alayhi Wasallam)
by Mawlana Ebrahim ."
Allaahumma Yassir Walaa Tua-ssir Wa-tammim Bil-Khayr
This kitaab (book) is a collection of Hadith of Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) wherein he prescribed medical cures for the body from the Qur'an and through Wahi (Revelation). This book is known as Thibinabiwi (cures prescribed by the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.), and is a collection of cures recommended by the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) to the Sahabas (R.A.) for various illnesses. It is, the original version and is completely authentic.
All praise is due to ALLAH who provides us with food and drink and cures us when we fall ill. When He causes us to die He will resurrect us.
Peace and blessings on the Chosen One. Nabi Muhammad (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) and His Family and His Companions.
Introduction
Man was created by ALLAH in order to worship Him for this, man requires a healthy body, so we must take care of our health. Good health is dependent on two things: (a) Du'aah; (b) medicines (dawa).
These require that certain habits or activities are either practised or left alone.
Many people believe that illnesses can only be cured by the use of medicines. To those who think in this way we would ask the following questions: "Do you believe that words have no effect on a person? If so, why do some people become angry if someone swears at them? Conversely, why do they feel pleasure when praised by someone else? If you accept both these things, you are admitting that words do have an influence on people."
Man has been created with a body and soul and our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was sent as a mercy unto mankind. As ALLAH taught our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) cure for the Ruh (soul) of man so also did ALLAH reveal to the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) the treatment of the body, when it is sick. Thus ensuring that our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) is a mercy unto man in every field.
This book is remarkable because it reveals that the cures prescribed by the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) contain the basic secret of medical science, that is they are both remedial and preventative (also prevents from becoming sick).
We must remember also that these cures of the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) are associated with the Wahi (Revelation), thus they are from ALLAH, whereas modern medicines are based on trial and error. Therefore, the stronger our Yaqeen and Imaan (faith), the sooner we can be cured by these prescriptions. If we are to use our sense of reasoning then we will fail.
Usamah Bin Shareek (R.A.) reports hearing some Sahaba asking the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "O Messenger of ALLAH! Is it not a sin for us to seek treatment for our illnesses in medicines?" The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) replied: "Seek your treatment by all means in medicines, O people of ALLAH! For with every sickness which ALLAH has created, he (ALLAH) has also produced its cure except for the sickness of death." (Hadith)
Summary
Thus cures rest on four (4) things:
(1) medicines; (2) dua (invocation); (3) by practising certain things; (4) by leaving out certain things.
Remember that these cures have all been prescribed by our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) and must be respected as such.
CURE 1 - 15
Nikah (marriage)
Preventative
Amongst the cures of the body the most important is Nikah. Ubadah Bin Samit (R.A.) narrates from the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "...I got married myself, so he who turns away from my way, he is not of my Ummat." (Had. 1)
In a second Hadith the Nabi (S.A. W.) states Mahakal Bin Yasar (R.A.) narrates from the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "Marry so that there may be affection, for I desire increase in MY Ummat." (Had. 2)
Abdullah Bin Masud (R.A.) narrates from the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "0 YOU Young people! Those amongst you who can afford it get married for it is a protection for the eyes and a Cover for your private (parts) and those of you who cannot afford to get married, for you is the fasting, that is your safeguard." (Had. 3)
Commentary
Two cures have been given in (above) these sayings of the Nabi (S.A. W.): (1) Nikah and (2) fasting.
(i) Nikah protects the body from many skin diseases and from blood impurities which is the cause of many illnesses.
(ii) The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) has warned against excessive coitus, because it weakens the body. As a result, many sicknesses can enter the body because it is not strong enough to withstand them.
(iii) For those who cannot perform Nikah, such a person should stem his urge and desire by fasting according to the Sunnah of the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam) which is as follows. For the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) warned against excessive fasting also.
Sunnah fasting
(a) 2 days a week; (b) 3 days a month (preferably 13th, 14th and 15th or any other 3 days); (c) the whole month of Shabaan; (d) 6 days after Eid-ul-Fitr; (e) 2 days fasting of Muharram; (f) the first 9 days of Zil-Haj.
These are the recommended days of fasting.
Cure 2
When the bridegroom brings his bride home, he must hold her forelock (forehead) (in private) and he must say the following Du'ah:
"O ALLAH! I seek the good that is in her and the good that she brings with her and O ALLAH!, I seek protection from the bad which is in her and which she brings with her (background)."
Cure 3
When one intends to have coitus then he should say the following duah:
"In the name of ALLAH! O ALLAH! Protect me from the evil of Shaytaan and protect me from Shaytaan affecting my rizk."
Commentary
By this Du'ah Shaytaan keeps away and pious children are born.
Cure 4
To have coitus in the latter part of the night is not advisable.
The stomach is full and is against Adab to commit this act on a full stomach. It is also against Adab to face Qiblah.
Cure 5
It is necessary that the Partners cover themselves during coitus for the Nabi (S.AW.) has said: "Do not become naked like wild asses."
Commentary
Shameless children are born as a result of it. Hazrat Ali (R) reports a person came once to the Nabi (S.AW) complaining that he has no children. The Nabi (S.AW) advised him to eat eggs. On one occasion the Nabi (SAW) complained to Jibril (A.S) about his strength. Jibril (RA) replied that he should eat harisah for it has strength of 40 men. Harisah is a kind of thick soup made of crushed wheat, mixed with meat, butter, etc. (spices)
Cure 6
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) also recommended the dye obtained from ghenna leaf, explaining that it was very good for ferility (energy). Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) taught that the removal of body hair increases a persons fertility (energy)
Preventative Cure 7
The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said that during cohabitation there should not be much talking, otherwise the child would be born deaf and dumb.

The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) also taught that if a man cohabits with his wife after having a wet-dream, this will result in the child either born with a mental abrasion (mental sickness), or will be a miser and warned very strongly against this practise.
The man having a wet-dream must first have a bath before having coitus with his wife.

Cure 10
He taught not to cohabit on a full stomach otherwise the child would be born dull-headed or stupid.
Cure 11
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) advised Hazrat Ali (R.A.) to refrain from cohabiting in the middle of the month (Islamic month 13th, 14th, 15th). For during this period the Shaytaan will be present (at his strongest). He (Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.)) taught the Sahabas that they should wash themselves after cohabitation (coitus), otherwise they may contract a disease which would be difficult to cure. They should wash their privates, for this would give them strength; but should refrain from using cold water for fear of catching a fever.
Cure 12
The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) warned that during cohabitation, the man should not look at his wife's private parts, otherwise the child may be born blind.
Cure 13
If a woman has difficulty during childbirth, the following d'uah should be written on paper, wrapped in a white cloth and tied round her left thigh. It will ease the birth.

Cure 14
When the child is born, azan should be given in his right ear and Iqaamah in his left ear as a result of this, the child will not suffer from epilepsy (fits).
Cure 15
After the child is born, either of the parent (or relative), should chew some dates an place it in the mouth of the child and make duah for the child. As a result of this, the child will turn out to be a mild, humane and gentle person.
Note: In place of the dates anything sweet can be used.
CURE 16 - 30
Cure 16
On the 7th day after the child is born, he/she should be given a good name, for the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) changed names - which had evil or bad meanings - into good ones. The child's head should be shaved and its equivalent weight given in the value of silver or gold. For a boy 2 sheep and a girl 1 sheep should be sacrificed (Aqeeqah).
The Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) informs us this will ensure that the child will remain in the care of Allah always.
Commentary
If a man embraces Islam, it can also be done, as it is Sunnah to do it on the 7th day.
Cure 17
If a person fears that his child may fall prey to evilsight, then he should write (recite) the following doah, and put it round the neck of the child:
A'oodhu bikalimaatillaahit taammaati min kulli shaytaani gamma wa min kulli aynin lamma
Meaning: I seek thy protection (complete) with all thy attributes from all forms of evil of Shaytaan and from all kinds of evil sight (eyes).

The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) partook of this fare and then blessed him. The Ulema comments that Sesamic seeds and dates form a balanced diet. Sesamie seed and dates are very good for the throat and voice as well.
CURE 61 - 75
Cure for fever 61
The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) says: "Fever is an influence of Jahannam so cool it down with water (ice)". In another Hadith the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) says: "When someone gets fever then pour cold water over him for 3 days before Fajr".
Imam Hambal (R.A.) reports that when our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) contracted fever, he would ask for a waterbag of water and sprinkle it over himself. Imam Tirmizi (R.A.) quotes a Hadith of Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) in his book: "When any of you has a fever, and surely fever is a piece of Jahannam, then it is necessary to cool the fever off with cold water by sitting in a flowing stream (shower) before sunrise and say:
"Bismillaah, Allaahumma ashfiy abdaka wasadaqa rasooluka.”
Meaning
(In the name of ALLAH. O ALLAH! Cure thy slave and your messenger has spoken the truth) and dive into the water 3 times, for 3 successive days (each day). Then if you are well, it is good, otherwise continue with this cure for 5, 7 or 9 days. But do not exceed 9 days, for by the order of ALLAH you should recover by then."
The Ulema comments that this prescription of Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) should be understood with the Arab people and climatic conditions of the region in which they live. Normally such fever arises from the intense heat of the desert. Thus they are of the opinion that it would not apply to fever arising from cold or from a virus or infection. Yet where one persists in using this cure as a remedy convinced in the truth of Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) saying, then he would surely recover. For as the Quran is of no use to the person who doubts, so also the sayings of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.).
Cure for running stomach 62
Both Bukhari and Muslim reports the following Hadith of a person coming to the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) reporting that his brother had a running stomach. The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) told him: "Go and give him honey." After a while he returned and reported: "O Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) it has increased (running stomach)." The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: “Give him honey again.” This transpired 3 times. Then the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) tells the truth and your brother’s stomach lies.” This person went back and gave him some honey and at last his brother recovered.
Commentary
Ulemas comments that to the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was revealed this cure by ALLAH. Thus there could be no doubt to its correctness. There was an obstruction in his stomach which had to be removed and honey did this by a gradual process. Honey acts as a laxative, therefore, it should be taken in small quantities.
Cure for energy 63
Ibn Abbas reports that the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: goes "Cheese is a sickness and nuts are also sickness. But both goes into the stomach then it becomes clean."
Commentary
Ulema comments neither cheese and nuts should be taken alone. They should be taken together or some item of food which will balance it.
Cure for strength, energy and vitality 64
Abu Sa-eed reports that the Roman Emperor sent a present of a jar of ginger jam to the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.). As a Present from the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.), he gave each Sahabi (R) a little bit.
Commentary
From this action of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) it is clear that the use of special extracts or compound or tonic for good health is permissible. Ginger in particular in ground form or as a preservative is very good for digestion. It creates hunger and gives energy and vitality. It also increases ones ability to think and remember.
Cure for a healthy body 65
Hazrat Ali (R) said that a person who wishes to protect his body and to guard it well from illnesses, it is necessary that he should eat in the morning and evenings. He should keep himself free from debts. He should refrain from walking barefoot and he should cohabit less.
Commentary
These two meals are essential and one good meal is prohibited. Debt is a health killer. Barefoot walking can cause injury and too much cohabiting weakens the person. In Arabia, barefoot walking was considered injurious due to hot sands.
Cure for stopping blood flow 67
It is recorded that the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) fell off the horse during the battle of Uhud and a nail from the helmet pressed his cheek as he fell. A Sahabi then bent over the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) and pulled the nail out with his teeth, but the nail was too deeply imbedded in the cheek of the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) that the Sahabi broke several teeth in the process.
Hazrat Ali (R) poured water while Hazrat Fatima (R) washed the wound, but the bleeding would not stop. Then on the instruction of the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) Fatima (R) burnt a piece of mat made of palm leaves and stuffed the ashes over the wound. This stopped the flow of blood immediately.
Cure for headaches (migrain) and for blood purification 68
It has been recorded that the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) allowed his blood to be let several times during his lifetime. Blood letting during his time was performed by an incision over the painful area, by cutting a vein and letting the blood out. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam,) blood has been let by his shoulders from his neck and from his head.
The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "Bloodletting is better than medicines," and he also said: "I did not pass any angel on the night of Meraj, but they told me to order my Ummat to let blood."
Commentary
We learn from these two sayings of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) that the cause of many pains is the blood and by letting out blood from the affected area, the person may be relieved of the pain. Here, however, the environmental factor must be taken into consideration, for Arabia is a hot and dry country and as a result of the intense heat, headaches are frequent and this is the cure which our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) prescribed for the Sahaba (R). From this Hadith, giving of blood is Sunnah.
Cure for leg pains, arthritis 69
Anas Ibn Malik (R) reports from the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "Guide yourself from arthritis with an Arab goat. So that it can be cooked and taken over several days on a hungry stomach." Arabs goat may refer to a wild goat. As to follow the Sunnah, any goat will do.
Commentary
A soup should be prepared from the meat of the rump (back) of the sheep, and the soup should be taken over three (3) days on a hungry stomach. This cure should prove effective for the pain of arthritis. He should take the soup on an absolutely hungry stomach.
Cure for good health 70
The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) once enquired from Asham Binti Ameez (R) what she used to keep herself in good health. She replied: "I drink warm milk." The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "But that is very hot for the body." She replied: "I also use senna herbs (leaves)." On hearing this, the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "If there was any cure for that, it would have been the senna.
Commentary
The medicinal value of senna leaves cannot be disregarded. Together with honey, the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) has praised its curative value. Those who use senna herbs are aware that it keeps them in peak health. It is also good for the blood and for headaches and skin diseases.
Cure for body ailments 71
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R) narrates a Hadith of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "For every sickness there is a cure in the black seed except for death."
Commentary
This black seed can cure practically every ailment known to mankind besides death. Amongst their sicknesses which it can remedy are:
(1) If rubbed, it removes inflammation (any part of the body).
(2) If eaten, it kills worms in the stomach.
(3) If boiled, the solution rubbed on the head, it will remove cold.

(19) It stops running stomach and wind and also stops chest pain.
(20) If eaten, it stops coughing.
(21) If eaten, it takes away nausea and vomiting.
(22) It relieves dropsy (disease).
(23) If it is taken with olive oil, it improves both colour and texture of the skin.
(24) If taken with vinegar, it kills worms in the stomach.
(25) If taken with honey, it removes stones from the bladder.
(26) If roasted and eaten, it relieves piles.
(27) If a swelling is very hard, mix it with the urine of an infant child to form an ointment, then smear it on the swollen part and it will go down.
(28) If applied with vinegar, it cures leprosy.
(29) If made into an ointment with vinegar, it will take away the swelling of testicles (children).
(30) If mixed with water of the melon (colocynth) bitter melon and applied to the navel, it will clear the stomach of worms.
(31) If mixed with the water of henna leaves and applied to the head, it will stop hair from falling off or turning brown and it also strengthens the hair.
(32) If mixed with rose water and applied, it cures wounds, cuts and bruises.
(33) If mixed with olive oil and applied to a man's private, it increases his sexual power.
(34) Hazrat Qatadah (R) says that a person who takes twenty-one (21) of these seeds, places it in a pouch and boils it in water, then put 2 drops of the solution thus obtained into the right nose an one (1) drop into the left nose on the first day and thus the opposite on the second day and again repeats the procedure of the first day of the third day, then such a person will never suffer from any kind of brain disease.
For the above reasons the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) has described this seed as been able to cure all diseases except death, for death is in the hands of ALLAH.
Cure for bodily ailments 72
In a Hadith it is recorded from our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) that: "Do not recognise four things as bad because of four things."
Here the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) means because they prevent 4 things. The Hadith continues: "First you should not consider it bad when your eyes are sore for its pain prevents blindness. Secondly do not complain if you have a cold for it prevents leprosy. Thirdly do not think it bad if you have a cough for it eliminates the likelyhood of paralysis. Fourthly do not complain if you have sores and pimples for these prevent the occurance of leprosy."
Cure for bodily ailments 73
Hazrat Ali (R) reports from Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "Eat garlic, O People! and treat yourself with it, for it contains cure for many sicknesses."
Commentary
In this Hadith, the medicine value of garlic is not only, stated but also stressed by our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.). This does not detract from the harmful effect of garlic which are stated towards the end.
Garlic remedies 74
(1) If applied to swellings, it puts it down.
(2) It assist urine flow in men and menstruation in women.
(3) It allows the body to sweat, thus curing its self from within.
(4) It clears the stomach of wind and stops running stomach.
(5) It purifies and strengthens the blood.
(6) It clears the voice and improves the tone.
(7) It strengthens the mind and improves the memory.
(8) It removes pains of the body, particularly sidepains.
(9) It is stimulating and is very good for stomach aches and pains. It also relieves pain in the joints in the body.
(10) It rids the stomach of worms.
(11) It removes thirst from a person who always feel thirsty.
(12) It clears the skin (rough).
(13) It keeps the bladder clear and prevents paralysis.
(14) If the garlic is boiled and then gargled with, it will strengthen the gums and teeth.
(15) Garlic ground into a paste, will open an abscess (boil).
(16) In ground form it will also cure swollen testicles.
These are some of the medicinal properties of garlic. Whilst it is certainly a good cure, one must beware of its drawbacks. For garlic used excessively, burns the blood, harms piles and it is also harmful for pregnant woman. Too much garlic generates biles and weakens eyesight.
The use of garlic is permitted with certain restrictions. It should only be used where necessary and then carefully so that one's mouth does not smell. The reason for this is that mala-ieka refrain from coming near to such a person. For they dislike its smell. Salaah is also prohibited. Therefore the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) instructed the Sahabas not to enter the Masjid after eating uncooked garlic.
Cure for leprosy 75
Hazrat Umar (R) is reported to have said: "Do not bath with water which has been heated by the sun, for it causes leprosy.
Cure for scabies (itch) 76
Hazrat Anas Ibn Malik (R) reported that two (2) Sahabas Abdurahman and Zubair Ibn Awwaam (R) got the itch and it worried them so much that they could no longer endure it. The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) gave them permission to wear silk clothes.
Commentary
Silk is Haraam for men. But in circumstances such as these, its use is permitted for it relieves the scratching and itching of scabies. Scabies is an infection of the skin which causes extreme irritation especially at night when a person becomes warm in bed.
Cure for pleurisy 77
Hazrat Zaid Ibn Arkam (R) reports from our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.): "Treat pleurisy, O People! with kust and olive." Kust is a type of plant root.
Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleura which is accompanied by pain in the chest, which is increased by coughing. The chest walls increase the pain by their movement and application of kust with olive serves to relieve the pain and it is also advisable to lick this mixture a few times.
Once when our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was very ill. The family assumed the symptoms to be that of pleurisy. So they gave him this mixture. The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) signalled to them to stop but they did not heed him. When he regained consciousness, he enquired as to what they had given him, and on being told, he said: "ALLAH has saved me from this sickness and added, whosoever put this medicine in my mouth, ALLAH will put in his mouth. This (medicine) is said to be bitter.
Commentary
From this Hadith we learn the seriousness of doing anything without knowledge of it. The harm done could be irrepairable, thus Hazrat Umar Ibn Aas (R) reports our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) as saying: "A person who treats without knowledge of the cure, such a person is responsible whatever happens."
Cure for throat infection in children 78 (Referred to as stommititus)
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) once came home and found Hazrat Ayesha (R) with a boy with blood streaming from his mouth and nose. He enquired from her as to the cause of the bleeding and was informed that the child had throat infection (Azra). On hearing this the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "O that woman! should press the throat of the young. Thereby indicating that one of the causes of the bleeding, was pressure being supplied by the mother or nurse on the throat of the child. As to the cure for this sickness our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) prescribed Kastibahri (Iodine in powder form) mixed with water and applied to the nose and mouth of the child. In regard to this our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "That alas for those nurses who killed their children in this way." Meaning thereby that the throat of a child is very delicate.
Remedy 79
Kastibahri is also useful for relieving bodily pains. Opening the bowels, improves digestion, increases strength, kills worms in the stomach (Intestine), removes pain from the head (consisting). Relieves pain in the joints of the body, if taken with lemon (juice). Then it removes colds and flu by the (4th) fourth day, and if taken with honey then it is helpful for shortbreath and coughing. If used as a mixture it calms the body of nervousness. If mixed it removes earaches and if this solution is melted it takes away headaches. Many medical men have refuted the many remedies which our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) gave for Kastibahri.
But nevertheless our Ulema reply in answer to the refutation that this is a miracle of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam) in a period where there was no other medicines available. Hazrat Ayesha (R) cured the child.
Cure for headaches 80
It is recorded in the Hadith that when our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) had headaches then his head was massaged with Mandy. Mandy = Ghenna.
And he used to say: "Verily this will benefit me by the order of ALLAH."
The Ulema reported that this was in the case where he had a headache. As a result of outside influence, e.g. intense heat, tiredness. Due to extensive travelling or as a result of some burden. If the headache was as a result of blood then he used to have cupping performed. Thus it is recorded that our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) prescribed this cure, e.g. the application of Mandy for stomach ache as well as for cuts, bruises, sores and pimples.
Remedy: Mandy opens the pores 81
Thereby drying out the element which is causing the suffering. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) also prescribed it for those suffering from skin diseases. Its application to nails was prescribed by our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam), to strengthen the nails and give its pure colour. If urine is stuck then Mandy applied, will release it in a short time. It is also known to release stones from the kidney. To remove any kind of swelling, to gargle with Mandy, will remove any sores or cuts in the mouth. For bodily aches Mandy applied, will remove the pain.
Cure for chest pains 82
Sa-ad (R) that the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) visited him while he was sick, and placed his noble hands on his chest. Sa-ad (R) adds further that the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) continued to leave his hand on his chest until his heart felt cold and then the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "You have pain in the chest, therefore go to Harris IBN Khalah (R), because he is used to curing people and tell him to take (7) seven dates, Medina, and to grind them in their pits and then to give them to you. You must eat it."
Commentary
The dates of medina have this speciality of curing chest aches and pains and the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) specified seven dates. The significance of this only ALLAH and his Rasool (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) know it has to do with revelation and it is not for us to understand it. In another Hadith our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "Whosoever eats seven (7) dates in the morning, he will not be touched by poison or witchcraft."
This also is beyond our understanding. As we accept ALLAH and his Rasool (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) so, also we must accept the varacity of whatever he says, the stronger our belief, the more beneficial our cure.
Our knowledge is Zani (result of our thinking) where as that of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) is Yakeeni (substantiated by ALLAH, (Absolute) no doubt).
Where a cure is given, we must remember to abstain is also Sunnah i.e. our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) once advised Suhaib Rum (R) and Ali (R) not to eat dates because of eyesore.
Cure for temporary paralysis 83
It is reported in the Hadith that a group of people once unwittingly ate from a certain tree and shortly afterwards fell unconscious and could neither feel or move. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) advised them to spray cold water on them between Azaan and Takbir.
Commentary
This particular event happened during the early morning, so cold water was thrown on them between Azaan and Takbir and Subh and their senses were restored.
Cure for sores 84
It is reported in the Hadith by one of the wives of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) that she had a sore on one of her fingers and our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) advised her to use Black Kammon seed (Jeera) grounded into a paste and applied to the sore to heal it.
Cure for an ill patient 85
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) advised to take special care not to upset a sick person when visiting him. One should speak to him about how long he would live, for this in no way will reduce whatever ALLAH has in store for him. The Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) warned against telling him false stories and also warned against unnecessary jokes. Sickness is a serious matter, some account of lightheartedness, is permitted as long as it is in reason.
Cure for anger 86
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) said: "O people! anger is a burning amber which is struck in the heart of man, therefore the eyes turn red and the neck muscles begin to throb."
Commentary
Our Ulema in commenting on this Hadith reports that anger makes a person lose his self control and then bring harm upon himself and others. It makes a person billious and has harmful side effects, such as causing headaches and dizziness and even unconsciousness. It makes a person emotionally unstable and people refrain to turn to him for help or guidance. In a state of anger he may even utter words of kufr. Thus disgracing himself through anger, his enemies increase and his friends diminish. Hatred and jealousy are born and in this state he can even inflict harm and injury. It is like a burning fire which destroys a person from within.
Cure 88
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) also cupped blood from his head but this was to remove the effect of witchcraft which had been committed by the Jews.
Cure for vomiting 89
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) performed wuzu immediately after vomiting.
Commentary
Our Ulema comments that vomiting relieves the body as well as cleaning it. The filth in the stomach is removed. Regular vomiting is not harmful but excess vomiting is harmful because it causes pain in the chest and stomach.
Cure for mouth smell 90
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) says: "He who eats Radish and fears that his mouth will smell, such a person should remember me (Make Salawaat).
Commentary
Our Ulema comments that it is strange but true that this is exactly what happens when Salawaat is recited after eating Radish. Radish creates appetite, clears the voice, cures throat infections, relieves piles. The salt in Radish clears urine, prevents wind, is good for skin and hair. Because all these benefits which Radish has, it is worth trying out oneself, this recipe of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.).

Commentary
Ajwam plant belongs to the koriander family, it grows in the east. It grows up to 3 ft tall; it grows on the tip of the plant and each seed has ridges with channels in between. These channels contain oil, it is this oil which contains mainly curative properties. Such as:

(1) Narcisus fruit is good for relieving the nerves or worms in the stomach. For a person who is suffering from wind, and its roots, if boiled in water, causes vomiting.
(2) cleans the womb and creates puss, thereby cleaning the wound or sore and if mixed with honey and made into plaster then it is good for joining broken and fractured limbs.

Cure for various sicknesses 97
Salma Bin Aku (R) relates that the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) used to rub the oil of musk on his head and beard regularly.
Commentary
The oil of musk or any other oil helps to keep the head both clean and clear. Maintains the colour of hair, strengthens mind and body. Is a stimulant (good for strength). Removes fear and dark thoughts and is also effective against colds and flu. It removes blockages in the body and helps to clear the stomach. In paste form it is good for strength and vitality.
The oil of musk especially is also good for the eyes and smelling. It increases consciousness by rubbing it on the body It helps it to make it active and it is also good for strains and for victims of paralysis. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) possessed a scent stone made of different oils. The scent of Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was more powerful than any other existing scent.
Anas Ibn Malik (R) reported that the scent of the sweat of the Nabi was more powerful than musk and amber. I did not find any existing scent compared with that of the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) Sweat.
Anas Ibn Malik (R) reported whichever pathway the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) crossed, he would leave behind a scent which could spread, by which scent the people recognise the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) passed through here.
Umm Salma (R) that she used the sweat scent of our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) with other scent in order to increase its fragrance because the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.), scent was more powerful.
Utbah Bin Wakat (R) a Sahabi of the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) had some rash on his body. So the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) ran his hands all over his body as a result of which the scent on the hands of the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) transmitted itself onto the body of Utbah. The effect of this, despite that Utbah having four (4) wives who daily had applied fragrance, yet the scent of Utbah, as a result of this contact with the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.), was more powerful than theirs. The rash disappeared and he never had it again.
Cure improve eyesight 98
In a Hadith it is reported that the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) regularly fragrance, and Timony (Surma) particularly before going to bed.
Commentary
The Surma used by our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was known as Samad and it originated from Isfahan into which our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) rubbed the scent of musk. In another Hadith it is recorded that a person should apply Surma to his eyes, an odd number of times (i.e. 3, 5, 7, 9)
(1) i.e. Twice to the right eye, twice to the left eye and once again to the right eye.
(b) Three times to the right eye and twice to the left eye.
(c) Three times to each eye.
The main reason for using it, is good for healthy eyes.
Cure for good health 99
It is a Sunnah of Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) to always accept scent when he was presented with it.
Commentary
Our Ulema commented by using scent and smelling it and by keeping the place clean, ensures good health and makes the heart strong. Because of cleanliness and a clean smell one feels well and brings happiness (the objects Arcuni you increase the Zikr of ALLAH,). In a Hadith the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) states: "Positively and permanently clean and pure is ALLAH alone. ALLAH therefore loves cleanliness. He who is clean is liked by ALLAH. ALLAH is generous and loves those who are generous. ALLAH is charitable and love those who gives charity.
Therefore O Muslims! Be clean and keep your houses and verandas and your yards also clean and do not heap sweepings and rubbish in your verandas like the Jews used to do."
Commentary
Our Ulema reported that the people can become ill as a result of bad and evil smell. Therefore, one should keep bad smells away from himself and from his body. A word of warning is given by the Ulema that there should be no exaggeration in making excessive fuss or degenerating into a hippy like existence (no extremes).
(a) One should not use the skins of wild animals in his home because it brings about fear. (disturb others from Zikr)
(b) Not to sweep at night because it results into poverty (against Sunnah).
(c) Never to sweep with a cloth (it makes Zikr) because this also leads to Poverty.
Cure 100
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) never mixed the following foods
(i) Fish and milk.
(ii) Sour and acid foods with milk.
(iii) Too hot food or too cold food which acts as laxatives. He also refrained from using milk or stale meat with fresh meat. By together, we mean at the same time. However, after digesting the one the other may be taken. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) advised in a Hadith that we should digest our food by making Zikr and making Salaah and not to sleep immediately after eating, because it hardens the heart.
Commentary
Another advise given by our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) for good health is to travel. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) says: "Do travel for it will make you strong and increase your rizk." Another reason for travel is because the various climates and winds may suit a person especially those that are ill.
Note: One must be careful never to criticise or condemn any place because health is from ALLAH and not from the place.
Cure advantages of Miswak 101
In a Hadith related by Ibn Abba the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) says: "Miswak brings clarity to speech, it cleans the mouth." ALLAH is pleased by it. It also cleans the teeth, it cleans the mouth of bad smell, it makes the gums strong, it clears the throat, it clears the saliva, it increases eyesight, it pushes away old age, it keeps the bare strength, it helps digestion, it removes the pangs of death, it reminds the person the Kalimah before death. Shaytaan runs away from it, it increases rizk, it removes toothache, it strengthens the digestive organs, it strengthens the mind. It clears the heart and put nur into it and also cures many of the body illnesses. This Hadith comprehensively illustrate the advantages of Miswak.
Cure regarding sleep 102
In the Quran ALLAH informs us that ALLAH has created the night for man to rest i.e. the body requires a rest after physical exersion after the day. Therefore each person should rest by sleeping, thereby regaining strength for work and prayer for the rest of the following day.
Commentary
Our learned doctors warn us that there should be adequate rest for the body in the moderation but not excess, for the only excess is permissable, is in Ibadah and in no other form is forbidden. They inform us, too much sleep creates laziness and weariness. Thus it is reported that Nabi Sulaiman's mother advises her son Sulaiman:
“My son do not sleep a lot because, excessive sleep will make you rise on the day of Qiyamat with no Amal."
Our Ulema are of the opinion that there are four (4) times during which a person should not sleep.
(1) Fajr (dawn up to sunrise) Haraam.
(2) During Chaast (work) 9-11.
(3) After ASR
(4) After Magrib.
Subuh time sleeping causes weakness of the body and makes a person scatterbrain (lazy etc.) (foolish).
Note: This excludes the sleep of Qailolah. Short nap after dinner and normal, takes place during midday for the nap is Sunnah, for it increases the power of concentration.
Cure Zum-Zum 103
It is reported in a Hadith that the water of Zum-Zum is a cure for many things. If one drinks it as a cure into treatment then AILAH will cure him. And if one drinks for protection then ALLAH will protect him. And if one drinks it for thirst, then ALLAH will quench your thirst. The doah to read as reported by Abdullah Ibn Abbas:
"Allaahummma inniy as-aluka ilman naafi’a wa rizqan waasiaa Wa shifaa-an min kulli daa-a"
O ALLAH! increase beneficial knowledge and rizk and cure me of all sicknesses.
Cure how to drink water 104
Abu Hurrairah (R) from our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) "When you drink water do not drink it all at once, for if you do so, it will cause a pain in your chest."
Anas Ibn Malik (R) quotes the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) as saying: "Drink your water in three (3) breaths, for by drinking so, you will quench your thirst well. You will save food and you will remain healthy.
From other Hadith we learn that our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) discouraged standing and drinking water. Our Ulema are of the opinion that by drinking water whilst standing, pain will be caused in the stomach, except for 3 kinds of water.
(1) Water of Zam-Zam.
(2) Wuzu water.
(3) Running water (river, fountain, etc.)
Our Ulema reports that there are four ways of sleeping.
(1) Flat on ones back.
(2) On ones right side.
(3) On ones left side.
(4) On ones stomach. Forbidden for Muslims.
(1a) The way of sleeping of the Anbiyaas.
(2a) The wav of sleeping of the Auvliyaas.
(3a) The way of sleeping of the rich and wealthy (wellfed) because it increases digestion.
(4a) The fourth style is that of Shaytaan.
If there is difficulty in sleeping make Zikr (rembrance of ALLAH). Sleeping a lot exerts spleen disease from the spleen. He will suffer from that disease. The spleen becomes hard (Lukemia).
Adhab
A person who eats on a full stomach, he must first lie on his right hand side for a while and turn over on his left side, thereby his food will be digested by the time he gets up.
Our Mashaikh reports that sleeping a lot during the day brings out all the dormant sickness of our body and also exerts pressure on the spleen. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) has warned us against keeping awake during the whole night for it brings indigestion, and weakness of the mind, and also it dries up the body, and it could lead to mental disorder. He told Ibn Masoon that his body has a right (Haq), therefore he should sleep at night and wake up for Subh, for if he did not wake up for Subuh, Shaytaan would urinate in his ears. However, it is advisable to sit and drink even these waters. Our Ulema says that by standing and lying down and drinking water, the digestive organs are weakening, as well as the limbs. From other Hadith we learn that our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was very fond of sweet and cold water. Thus Hazrat Ayesha (R) that drinking water for the Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) used to be brought from a place called Saqiya, which is 2 days journey from Madina.
Our Ulema reported that the best time to drink water is after eating, but it is even better to drink water after the food is digested. They also recommend drinking water before eating meals, for it cools the heat in the stomach and by drinking after the food has digested the water, creates heat in the stomach, and also very good for health. So drinking water whilst eating is a very bad habit. It creates hunger and digest the food quickly. (One eats more).
Imam Ghazal writes in his Kitaab "Ihya Uloom". Do not drink water after sleeping, because it takes away the natural heat of the body and do not drink water after Ghusl (bath), also not after cohabitation (sex). Otherwise it will create (shaky) palsy. Also not after eating fruit, because it brings about sores on the tongue. He says the best water to drink is rain water. Rain water when it flows in a stream east to west, or from west to east or north to south. But rain water which flows from south to north should not be drunk.
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) always keeps basins covered (pots and pans etc.) and all open recepticals which contain food. Because every year during one night ALLAH sends down pestilence (plaque) (disease) and it does not cover any open basin without entering or falling into the centre of it. This includes a basin that keeps water.
Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was very fond of mixing some water with his milk in order to make he milk milder to take away some of the heat. Our Nabi (salallahu alayhi wasallam.) was fond of mixing honey with water to make a moderate drink. He also used to wet dates in water and leave it for a night or two and then extract the juice for vigour and vitality and making the heart and mind strong. But he warned if any person drank it for the sake of pleasure, then it will be Haraam. He must only drink it for Ibadah.
